Cynicism

All the people you love will eventually disappoint you.

Forgive them anyway.

Or don't.

It's fine.

Your Not So Classic James

Your Not So Classic James
James McAvoy in Filth was definitely not the actor I fell in love with. But he sure as hell gave an outstanding performance as Bruce Robertson in this wittingly cunning film based on a novel written by Irvine Welsh, the same brain behind the book Trainspotting.

Filth (2013)
A film by Jon S. Baird

A corrupt cop manipulates and hallucinates his way through a bid to secure a promotion and win back his wife and daughter.*

The same rules apply.

Bruce was corrupted, cunning, manipulative and will go beyond the unimaginable just for a job promotion. However, with McAvoy's brilliance, as well as Baird's, before the film ends, I found myself feeling sympathy for this anti-hero character. The beginning of the plot almost lost me for I thought Bruce was merely a soulless protagonist-villain who does not have enough back story (for me) to cling on. The film, with its title, clearly warned us of its graphic and chaotic world, but McAvoy is a revelation, and is actually the true highlight of the film. I hate to admit that I nearly allowed myself to loathe one of my most favorite actors. As Bruce gets into his even darker side, falling into a more serious state of psychosis, McAvoy filled all the holes. Hilarious, interesting and brilliant in its own way.
